New hardcover with dust jacket Kodas chronicles the new atmosphere and ethics emerging in the base camps and high camps of world's 8000 meter peaks, especially Mount Everest. Although his stories of gear theft, greed, fighting, ego problems, incompetence and even manslaughter have been mentioned in some newspapers and on some websites, the world in general is unaware of an environment on Everest that resembles the Wild West in the days of Wild Bill Hickock. Using is own experiences on two recent Everest expeditions, plus the documented experiences of other climbers, both experienced and inexperienced, dead and alive, he describes a series of problems on both sides of Everest that defy belief. I have been climbing since the 1960s and except for car break-ins and pilfered gear stashed below climbs, crime has not been a part of the climbing experience. Now it is. This muckraking book may stir up a hornet's nest of outrage within, and outside, the climbing community. He even describes how many so called fund raising or charitable climbs, and environmental clean-up climbs, are really scams to get free trips to Everest for the leaders. Is anybody surprised? The book is very disturbing, and certainly makes you re-examine your beliefs about what proper mountain behavior is in the 21st century, and how did it get so bad. Certainly the easy access to both base camps, the many available guide services and base camp amenities, the fall of the iron curtain, plus the surge of interest after the 1996 Everest tragedies are all partly to blame. Kodas wisely offers no solutions, leaving you to discuss this with your friends, and try to find solutions of your own.
