LIFE MAGAZINE JUNE 29, 1953 had an 8 page article with 20 b/w photos of the first ascent of Mount Everest, which has occurred just a month earlier. The story was so important that is was followed up 2 weeks later when it was the cover story, and the color was then used on several photos. Above is an alternative photo of Tenzing on the summit, not the famous photo used everywhere. I have never seen this version except in this issue of Life Magazine. This is the photo of Tenzing that was used everywhere. There must have been a great rivalry between Life Magazine and National Geographic to cover events such as this one. In this case Life was the winner in getting two articles out while the story was still fresh. Nat Geo's article on the first ascent of Everest did not appear until a year later. I think they learned their lesson. Now there is at least one article every year in Nat Geo which is a monthly, that is in 12 issues, not 52 like Life had, which was a weekly. These may have been the first photos that most Americans had seen of this momentous climb, possibly the most important ascent of a mountain in history. After all, how many times will the highest peak on our planet have its first ascent. Some of the familiar photos are reproduced, as well as some less familiar, in fact, the summit photo of Tenzing is different from the familiar one seen so often. The entire issue is present. At the time the was one of the largest circulation magazines in America, and had an influence on the public as great as the TV show 60 Minutes or Jay Leno has today. It was entertainment and news, with great photos, and everybody read it. The article covers the climb only, although the pictures show the tumult as they arrived in villages and Kathmandu on the way out. The magazine is in Very Good condition. The cover is complete with no Chips, but does have edge wear, and some page corners have been folded. It would still look terrific framed on a wall, or protected in a sleeve.
