Reaching from Central New Mexico northward to the Canadian border, the Rockies are an enormous, sprawling geographic province. Peak upon peak rises above 13,000 feet and in Colorado, highest in the region's six states, over 50 summits top 14,000 feet.

Down the main stem of these many linked ranges runs the Continental Divide, separating waters of the Atlantic and the Pacific; rains falling from a single summer shower along this crest can equal ease water crops in California's Imperial Valley or burst levees in New Orleans. The shapes of individual mountains are enough to stir an imagination for a lifetime; the amplitude of planet life includes species found all the way from the Alaskan North Slope to Mexican Sonora.

In this last great enclave of the wild, open space in the contiguous 48 states, wildlife thrives in an abundance unmatched elsewhere between the two coasts. Equally rich are the many stories of this land of vertical rock. Vast upwellings from the bowels of the Earth, together with crustal movements and extensive erosion that followed, also brought to light great mineral wealth. Geological history set the stage for the economic geography of today. Its human history is a long record of well met challenges.

The Rockies know accounts of Native Americans of the Arapaho nation building eagle traps on lofty summits, of early fur trappers and prospectors enduring every severity of the mountain world, of settlers who came after and doggedly toughed it out (as many of their grandchildren still do today). David Muench's bold imagery and David Sumner's far ranging text both lend ample homage to the immense scope of this great land. Days of solitude with only the rippling of water, rocks, the sun, moon and stars for company were spent in pursuit of the many moods and expressions of the interminable Rockies.

Follow with them an adventure from the Sangre de Cristo Range in New Mexico northward through Colorado, Idaho, Utah, Wyoming, to Glacier National Park in Montana. In photographs and words, this is a celebration of the emotions, wonder and love that the Rocky Mountains can so suddenly evoke.
