About the Author: Herb Hultgren, M.D. was Professor of Medicine Emeritus, Stanford University School of Medicine. An experienced clinician and teacher, he served as Chief of Cardiology at Stanford University Medical Center and later at the Veterans Administration Hospital, Palo Alto, California. Dr. Hultgren began his pioneering work in 1959 in the Peruvian Andes where he initiated the early studies of high altitude pulmonary edema. He was an avid mountaineer who climbed in the European Alps, South America, Mexico and the United States. He was an active and long-time member of the American Alpine Club. His contribution to the literature in cardiology and high altitude medicine were extensive.
