Cleveland, Burrows, no date [ca. 1899]. Tall 8vo. 164+ 75 pp, 99 famous illustrations drawn by Edward Whymper. Original green cloth hardcover, decorated with mountain climbing vignettes on the front vover and spine. The author's and title appear on the front and the spine. The titles on the spine are gilt, and the vignettes are red and black. The cover cloth is not soiled and still quite bright. Hinges are still tight, and there is virtually no edge wear. Some of the pages have yellowed, but they otherwise Fine. There is a discrete 2''x 2.5'' bookplate on the pastedown, that is inside the front cover. It looks very old fashioned, you may like it. I do. The cover's edges are beveled. All edges of the pages are gilt. The book is Fine. Personal disclosure. We bought a copy of this edition from a bookshop in Camden Maine in 1968 (I was a youthful 24) and paid $15 which equals $135 in 2024 ! It was one of the first old Mountaineering Books that we bought, and we were thrilled to have such a nice old book on the shelf. Since the 1980s we have bought and sold several copies, and we always recommend it as a gift for lovers of older Mountaineering Books. Edward Whymper relates his mountaineering activities in the Alps from 1860-69, including the first ascent of the Matterhorn. Well illustrated with Whymper's famous engravings, the text is in a two column format. This was probably the most common edition of Whymper's Scrambles that was published in the USA, possibly even more copies than any British edition of the 19th century, as it is so common today. Whymper's classic was combined with another title, Down The Rhine, for a Two-Fer. Published by two different publishers, Lippincott and Burrows, this is a beautiful 19th century book for a very reasonable price. This edition was published with Lady Blanche Murphy's excursion on the Rhine River in one binding. What the two books have in common is they were both on the grand tour of Europe in the 19th century. One went cruising on the Rhine River to see ancient castles [both Berg und Schloss], and then off to the Alps, to ogle at the Matterhorn and Mont Blanc and to eat Raclette.
