We have a nice old wood handled ice axe and it is signed by six of the greatest climbers of the 20th century. The axe was made by Stubai, and is perfect for display over your mantlepiece. Made in Austria. Used but in nice shape, handsome.
On the handle are the signatures in rich black marker of some of the following great mountaineers: Sir Edmund Hillary, Sir Chris Bonington, Reinhold Messner, Kurt Diemberger, Jim Whittaker, Maurice Herzog. Messner's is in ink.
We (Michael Chessler) personally had every legend climbing legend affix his signature in my presence. We did our book signings in the 1990s and 2000's. The signing was all over by 2008 when Hillary passed away. In 2025 Messner (only 80!), Bonington, Diemberger and Whittaker are all their 90s. We sold the axes until we ran out. This is one we bought back from a long time customer.
