Munchen, 1971, 1st edition. 223 pp, color & b/w photos. This is Messner's first and scarcest book, and the book has a long story. In this, his first Himalayan climb, Messner and his brother Gunther climbed Nanga Parbat and descended another route, with Gunther dying on the descent. This book sparked controversy from the beginning, as Messner accused the expedition leader, Karl Herrligkoffer, of incompetence, and Herrligkoffer sued Messner and won, causing this book to be withdrawn from the bookshops and most copies destroyed!
