London, 1943, 1944 or 1947, 2nd, 3rd or 4th printing. 222 pp, 31 b/w plates. 8 inch tall black cloth hardcover with no dust jacket. The books may have faded spine or bumped corners. Interiors are near fine or fine. Good or Very Good condition. This is actually a short biography of Eric Shipton, written and published during WWII, and very successful. It influenced all his major and early climbs, including Everest and Africa with Tilman. There is material in this volume that is not included in any of his other books. This small wartime book tells of Shipton's greatest adventures. Shipton began climbing in the Alps and in 1928 he went to Kenya as a coffee grower, and first climbed Nelion, a peak of Mount Kenya in 1929. It was also in Kenya's community of Europeans that he met his future climbing partners Bill Tilman and Percy Wyn-Harris. Together with Wyn-Harris and Tilman he climbed the twin peaks of Mount Kenya. With Frank Smythe, Shipton was the among the first climbers to stand on the summit of Kamet, 7816 meters, in 1931, the highest peak climbed at that time. Shipton explored the 'Blank on the Map' north of the Karakoram with Tilman. Shipton was involved with most of the Mount Everest expeditions during the 1930s and later, including the 1935 Mt Everest expedition. The book was very popular, one of the few British mountaineering books published during WWII, and had 4 printings. In Upon that Mountain, Eric Shipton, the famous mountaineer, gives his own account of the ascent of Mount Kenya band the great Everest and Nandi Devi expeditions which followed.
