VULGARIAN DIGEST: SET OF ALL THREE ISSUES American Rock Climbing was born in the 1960s in several places, Boulder Colorado, Yosemite Valley California and the Shawangunks in New York. The climbers in each area thought they were hot stuff, and wanted to chronicle what they were doing on paper, in Guidebooks, Club Journals, Climbing Magazines, and a humorous rag called The Vulgarian Digest. Some eastern climbers, mostly denizens of the Gunks, were amused at the serious and high class efforts of the Yosemite and Sierra Club crowd. When the professionally produced Sierra Club Ascent started appearing yearly from 1967 onwards, a loosely organized group of Gunks climbers calling themselves the Vulgarians, responded with three issues of the Vulgarian Digest in 1970 and 1972. The VD as it was called did not attempt to brag about what Gunks climbers were doing, but with a twisted sense of humor they just wanted to have some fun. We recently came across one set of all three issues of the VDs and we are offering it only as a set. The first two issues have condition problems. They are all complete, but the covers of Volume one is detached, and Vol 2 has been scotch taped. As you can see in the images there is some spotting, probably coffee rather than foxing. Cartoons, photos. etc. In VG condition. The cover image is the famous photo of Dick Williams climbing Shockley's Ceiling. This is one of the scarcest and most collectible climbing item from the second half of the 20th century. VULGARIAN DIGEST VOLUME TWO FALL 1970 *By: Kelsey, Joe, Sheridan Anderson, etc* *- Item # OP1802B-830* Volume Two, Fall 1970. 36 pp. Second issue of this humorus and vulgar landmark magazine. Cartoons, photos. etc. In VG condition. Famous topless photo of Elaine Mathews on the cover. This is one of the scarcest and most collectible climbing item from the second half of the 20th century. VULGARIAN DIGEST VOLUME 3 SPRING 1972 By: Kelsey, Joe, Sheridan Anderson, Warren Harding, Galen Rowell, etc. 49 pp, photos. Near Fine condition. 1972, Spring. 40 pages (wierdly numbered 1-35). Third and final issue of this humorous, vulgar, and landmark magazine. Parodies, cartoons, photos. etc. Staple bound magazine with stories, photos and drawings. This copy is slightly soiled (possibly removable with a Magic Rub eraser). Internally Fine. Overall Near Fine. A rare copy of one of the most notorious publications in mountaineering. Lots of 1970s nudity, rock climbing in New Paltz and the Shawangunks by Guy Waterman, a letter to the Alpine Club of Canada from an Indian Lady, Three Days in the White Mountains, A rejection letter to Galen Rowell from Playboy rejecting an article on Warren Harding as "his notoriety is too superficial and fleeting," more.
