London, 1800, 1st edition. 473 pp, 13 plates, map. Quarto. AEG. Handsome modern full leather binding with raised bands and marbled endpapers. There is slight yellow toning on some pages, but no foxing and less aging than most books aged 2 � centuries. The binding is tight, and most surprising, there is no edge wear or corner bumping. Of course the book was rebound into this handsome leather binding, and it looks to be over 50 years old. This kind of bookbinding work is not often seen anymore. This was the first account of Tibet to appear in English, until the publication of Bogle�s narrative in 1875. Samuel Turner was sent by Warren Hastings, Turner's cousin, then Governor General of Bengal, to Shigatse in Tibet to open trade relations for the East India Company. This is the account of the second Mission to Tibet made by Turner at the request of Warren Hastings in 1783. This followed on from Bogle's 1774 Mission. The account of Bogle's Mission was not published until much later and so Turner's account remained the earliest and best narrative on Tibet in English for many years. This book is of course exceedingly scarce, and this copy is Fine throughout. Samuel Turner, a captain in the Indian army, was sent to Tibet in 1783 by Warren Hastings as the head of a mission to congratulate the lamaist regency on the installation of the new grand lama of Tibet, the Tashi Lama, a follow-up to Bogle�s mission of 1774. Following Bogle�s route, he reached the summer palace of the Deb Raja of Bhutan in June, and in September reached Tashi-Lhunpo in Tibet where he had an audience with the infant Tashi Lama, who, Turner was informed, could understand every word he said! Turner successfully concluded a commercial treaty with the Regent, Chanjoo Cooshoo, before returning to Patna, in March 1784. Turner�s account is a highly detailed portrayal of the area�s natural history and social and cultural characteristics, and includes an account of Tibet from 1785-1793, and a description of the Nepalese-Tibetan War of 1788-1792. Turner�s original report of the mission to Warren Hastings is included as an appendix. The fine engraved views were drawn by Lieutenant Samuel Davis, as a member of the mission. This was the first account of Tibet to appear in English, until the publication of Mannering's and Bogle�s narrative in 1875.
