Germany and Switzerland, 1989, 1st edition. 223 pp, color and b/w photos. In English, German and French. Large format hardcover. Fine condition. No DJ was issued with this book, as it has a fine pictorial cover.
This is a large format book. Extra postage will be requested for Priority Mail and International Mail. This copy is SIGNED by Reinhold Messner.
A scarce Messner title. Although published with English text, the book was never sold in the UK or USA, so it is rarely seen. It is a photo and text description of 125 of the world’s most famous peaks, from El Capitan to Everest, the Matterhorn to Dhaulagiri. There is quite a lot of text, on solo climbing, becoming a mountaineer, rock climbing, first ascents, the Alps as a subjective experience, and 20 more essays.
It is possible that this book was never sold in bookshops either. Perhaps it was sold by mail to magazine subscribers. Reinhold was fully aware of this book when I asked him to autograph copies, and if I get another chance to meet him I will ask how it was sold to the public.
The cover has the title in English, French and German:
The World'e Greatest Peaks
Die Schonsten Gipfel der Welt
Les Plus Beaux Sommets du Monde
