Fred got his start in climbing by doing first ascents in the Cascades with his brother Helmy in the 1930's and 1940's. His first book was in 1949 and was the first true climbing guidebook to the Cascades. So it is appropriate that his magnum opus should be a complete history of all the explorers and early climbers of that great range.
