London, 1860, 5th edition. 328 pp, 9 fold-out maps, engravings. Gold embossed design of on front cover. This may have been a school prize in 1860. This has been rebound from its original cloth to a handsome and highly decorated leather binding. The binding is nicely decorated on the spine. The covers of the book has come apart from the spine, which is still firm and tight. Neither the maps or the lithographs has come loose. It can be easily rebound by a competent bookbinder, and the covers and spine can be saved and used. The repair will not be visible. However, you may pay more for the repair than we are charging for the book. But, as the spine part of the binding is tight, it is not needed immediately. Peaks, Passes and Glaciers is one of the most famous and important books in the literature. Neate calls it ''the cornerstone of any mountaineering collection.'' ''One of the most famous titles of Mountaineering literature.'' This book was there when mountain climbing was being created. As this book was printed in 1860, it is 165 years old, and was also actually there, in London, when a group of gentlemen got the idea to visit the Alps, and see if they could get to the top, and enjoy it. This is a well-illustrated series of records and anecdotes of members of the British Alpine Club which led to the 1863 commencement of the Alpine Journal. John Ball, President of the Alpine Club between 1858-60, first suggested to William Longman that they publish a volume of mountaineering experiences. It is one of the books that document the ''Golden Age of Alpine Climbing.'' This is when the first ascents of all the major peaks was done, from 1950 to 1865. ''These publications [are] essential to any study of Victorian mountaineers...These early publications and the [Alpine] Journal provide a continuity of Mountaineering narrative from the very beginnings of the Alpine Club.'' (Cox). A second series of Peaks, Passes and Glaciers appeared in 1862, and a third in 1932.
