San Francisco, Sierra Club, 1983, 1st edition. 191 pp, 100+ color illustrations. Several expeditions to Tibet: Mustagh Ata, Tian Shan, Minya Konka, Amne Machin. Large-format hardcover, DJ, Fine. This copy SIGNED by Galen Rowell on the blank endpaper. Not inscribed, just signed. Drummond Rennie is a well known Physiologist with a great love for mountaineering, and was the doctor on many expeditions. Has has done research into cyanotic congenital heart disease and acute and chronic hypoxia in the Andes, Yukon, Alaska, the Alps, and Himalayas. From the dust jacket: �In 1980 the Chinese government opened parts of the mountain provinces for the first time. This vast region�an area as large as the western United States�had been seen by very few occidentals since the silk traders traversed it in Maro Polo�s time: from 1950 until 1980 it was completely sealed off from foreign travel. Galen Rowell was among the first to travel there on assignment for National Geographic. This book is the first thorough documention of that territory by a Western author. Rowell�s text recounts his extensive explorations and recreates the journies of past explorers�from Marco Polo to George Leigh Mallory, Eric Shipton, Heinrich Harrer and Terris Moore in major mountain regions from the Tian Shan to Inner Tibet.� GALEN ROWELL and his photographs won many awards including the Ansel Adams Award. His photographs have been exhibited at the International Center of Photography, the California Academy of Sciences, the Smithsonian, the Ansel Adams Gallery, etc. Rowell wrote several excellent books and his work has been published in many prominent magazines. Sadly, Rowell and his wife, Barbara, were killed in a small plane crash in 2002 approaching Bishop, California. Rowell had an amazing record of climbing and exploration: Over 100 first ascents of routes in Yosemite Valley and High Sierra Nevada. First one-day ascent of Mt McKinley, aka Denali, in Alaska. First ascent of Great Trango Tower in the Karakoram. First ski ascent-descent of Mustagh Ata First ascent of NE Ridge of Amne Machin (second ascent of the mountain by few days). First ski circuit of Denali About 40 expeditions to remote peaks including Nun Kun, K2, Mount Everest, various Karakoram peaks & spires, Patagonia, Kilimanjaro, Gasherbrum II, Alaska, Yukon, Canadian Rockies, etc.
