Detailed Product Description

Collecting cards on all subjects was a popular hobby in pre-WW2 Europe, comparable to collecting baseball cards in the USA. Cards were usually included in cigarette packs, gum, chocolate and candy. One popular subject in Europe and the UK was mountaineering.
This is a complete and original rare set of 20 cards presented in packs of Player Cigarettes during 1925. The set features climbers and scenery from the 1924 British Everest Expedition, and also shows the climbers including George Mallory and Sandy Irvine. The cards are in good condition and each measures
approximately
3 inches x 2 1/2 inches . There is detailed text in English on the back of each card. Very rare and highly collectible.
The cards in these images are the actual size of the cards on our computer screen. We are viewing it on a 24'' wide screen.
The Tobacco Company that became Players was founded in 1820. John Player bought it in 1877, and it was owned by his family until 1901. Then USA cigarettes came in a took market share. At its height in the 1950s it had 11,000 employees in the UK. It made a major reduction in 2016, but still has 700 employees. It is still sold under the Player name in the UK, Canada, Ireland, Pakistan and other South Asian countries and the Middle East.
As advertising tobacco is almost entirely banned, they support Auto Racing as a permitted way to advertise,
and the cards were a major enterprise for decades, as did other tobacco and candy companies:
Cigarette Cards
(From Wikipedia)
Player's were one of the first UK tobacco companies to include sets of general interest cards in their packs of cigarettes. One of the first sets, produced in 1893, was Castles and Abbeys. These cards were generally produced in sets of 50 and have since become highly collectible. Other sets produced include Street Cries (cries of street vendors) in 1913 and 1916; Footballers (1926); Civil Aircraft (1935); Motor Cars (1936) and a Coronation Series in 1937 (George VI, father of Elizabeth II.) John Player & Sons issued more than 200 sets of cards and some were reprinted in the 1990s.
In sports, Player's released several cards series, mostly Association Football collections. One of them was the "Cup Winners" series, featuring FA Cup winning teams and the illustrated "Hints on Association Football" in 1934, where some football movements (kicks, passes, defensive tactics, etc.) were shown. Player's also released a Rugby Union series in 1926, and a Cricket series in 1934.
As mountaineering had its first major impact on modern culture in the 1920s when the British took the sport they had invented, climbing, and took it to the world's highest mountains, convenientally located in and adjacent to India, still a major colony of the UK until 1948. It fit right in with the other manly enterprises for their cards such as Soccer and Auto Racing.
In America card collecting had its major impact through Baseball.
EVEREST 1924 – CIGARETTE CARDS
A Full Set of 20 Cigarette Cards issued by John Player & Sons
1925
First Edition, a scarce complete set of 20 cards in very good condition. Issued with 'Player's Navy Cut Cigarettes', with black and white images of the 1924 British Expedition led by Edward Norton.
The photographs on the cards were taken by Capt. Noel and Howard Somervell, and each card has a description of the photograph on the reverse. The cards are quite large being approx 3 inch x 2.5 inch in size. One of the photographs was the highest ever taken at that time and it was of course on this expedition that Mallory and Irvine were lost near the summit.
