SIGNED and numbered by George Wharton James Boston, 1900, 1st edition [Pasadena Edition]. 341 pp, many photos, bibliography, marbled endpapers. (The Pasadena Edition of the book was limited to 500 copies, each signed and numbered; this copy is No. 247.) Profusely illustrated with b&w photos, including large folding panoramic photo of the Grand Canyon. 3/4 burgundy leather with sandstone-color cloth covers. Front cover is detached; interior and binding are Fine. Overall, Very Good. 1st edition is scarce. Front cover is detached, rear hinge is getting loose, all edges are worn. Similar copies but in better condition are prices as high as $450 on the internet. This book is larger and heavier than usual. Extra postage will be requested for Media Mail, Priority Mail and International Mail 'James spent a great deal of time at the Grand Canyon over a number of years and visited many out of the way spots. Because so much of the book records personal experiences it has special historical value and is in many respects one of the best of the Grand Canyon books.' - Francis Farquhar. [Farquhar 64.] George Wharton James was a prolific booster of California through his many books on the beauties of the state published in the first decades of the 20th century. He was a part of the circle of writers that formed in Carmel following the San Francisco earthquake of 1906, including Jack London, George Sterling, Mary Austin, et al. Probably pre-Clint Eastwood.
