[Neate X39.] First published Rum Doodle in 1956, The Ascent of Rum Doodle quickly became established as a mountaineering classic. As an outrageously funny spoof about the ascent of a 40,000-and-a-half-foot peak, many thought it was inspired by the 1953 conquest of Everest. But Bowman had drawn on the flavor and tone of earlier adventures, of Bill Tilman and his 1937 account of the Nanda Devi expedition. The book's central and unforgettable character, Binder, is one of the finest creations in comic literature THE CRUISE OF THE TALKING FISH London, 1957 [1992]. The Cruise of The Talking Fish is a sister book, or sequel, to The Ascent of Rum Doodle, and is a parody of Thor Heyerdahl's Kon Tiki: By Raft Across the South Seas, about crossing the Pacific Ocean from South America in a homemade raft, to prove that Polynesia was settled by indigenous people from from South America and not from Asia. Kon-Tiki a best seller in 1947. The Cruse Of The Talking Fish had only one hardcover edition, in 1957, the year after Rum Doodle. This combo with both books from Pimlico, a UK paperback publisher, is the only one we have ever seen. In 1992 we carried this edition as a new book, but that was then, this is now. This apparent insider knowledge led many to assume that 'W.E. Bowman' was in fact a pen-name of W.H. Tilman, whose normally ascerbic and dry-witted delivery make his climbing and sailing books such a delight in contrast to that of most of his peers.
