CA, Sierra Club, 1956, 1st edition. 159 pp, route diagrams, photos. This hardcover copy is Fine, the book itself is really Like New. The Dust Jacket however, is worn on most edges,and there are some repaired splits on the folds. There are no chips or pieces missing, the DJ is all there, just not pretty like it should be. We have put one of our polyester Brodart Dust Jacket covers on it, and all the flaws have disappeared. I never expected to see the early climbing guide books of the Sierra Club become scarce. The Ortenburger Teton guide is not really scarce if you can settle for the 1965 reprint. But now 68 years has passed, and we just do not see Ortenburger Teton first editions in nice dust jackets anymore. Since we started our website in 2004, we have listed only two or three first editions in a decent dust jacket. This Teton guidebook lists route descriptions with difficulty ratings and detailed information on access, approach considerations, safety measures. It also surveys Teton climbing history, geology, climate, hiking and climbing routes. Leigh Ortenburger's Grand Teton Climbing Guidebooks have been the standard Teton guidebooks since 1956. This 1956 1st edition is a landmark book in American mountaineering, giving climbers a reliable and accurate guidebook two years before Warren Harding climbed El Capitan's Nose, often regarded as the starting point of modern mountaineering. Of course the 1965 second edition was the book that really impacted getting many people to climb in the GRand Tetons. Anecdote: Tom Frost once asked us to sell him a run of American Alpine Journals starting in 1958. Why 1958? He said that modern climbing really began with Warren Harding's climb of the Nose of El Capitan in 1958. (I don't think Tom said ''modern,'' I added that. He just said climbing began in 1958.)
