New York, Cascade Section of the American Alpine Club, 1961, 3rd edition, 1961. 386 pp, b/w photos, illustrations. Maroon cloth hardcover, 6.5'' x 4.5 ''. Condition is Very Fine, Unused. This copy is SIGNED by Dee Molenaar on the front endpaper, ''Berg Heil, to Summit, Dee Molenaar, 3-7-61'' ''Salute the Mountains.'' Berg Heil was a common greeting by European climbers before 1960, less commonly used these days. Dee Molenaar was on the 1953 K2 expedition, and he made the maps for this book, and many others. This guidebook was the first book by written Fred Beckey, and it is now scarce and one of the most collectible American mountaineering guidebooks. It is also one of the last guidebooks bound as a hardcover, as the publisher knew that this book would see some hard use and there was no stronger binding available to be carried in a pack. Almost all the early AAC guidebooks were small hardcovers, mostly 6.5'' x 4.5 ''. Fred Beckey Fred Beckey started climbing at age 12, and climbing seriously while still a teenager. This was in the 1930s when hardly anybody was climbing. Among the Fifty Classic Climbs of North America, seven were established by Beckey, often climbing with some of the best known climbers of each generation. His name appears in the index three times as many times as the next climber. In the late 1940s, he asked The Mountaineers of Seattle to publish his first climbing guidebook Climber's Guide to the Cascade and Olympic Mountains of Washington. They turned him down, and in 1949 the American Alpine Club agreed to print a few hundred copies. It was so successful it was reprinted in 1953, and then revised and updated in 1961. He continued writing books, most notably the revised Cascade Guide as the Cascade Alpine Guide in 3 volumes, 1973, 1977, and 1981. Much updated, it is still the definitive three-volume description of the Cascades from the Columbia River to the Fraser River, still published in the 2020s by The Mountaineers.
