This book was published as Mountaineering: The Badminton Library of Sports and Pastimes, but it has no content other than the fine narration by Clinton Dent. It does not look or sound like a book that is part of an artificial set of books. The lovely leather binding was supplied by the publisher, which was very rare for its day. London, Longmans, Green and Co., 1892, 2nd edition. 440, with 13 plates and 93 text illustrations by H.G. Willink and Ellis Carr. 8''x6'' hardcover, bound in a beautiful blue color � leather binding with cloth boards. Beautiful blue and gold marbled endpapers. The spine letters are all in gold and are bright with no loss, nice raised bands. Binding is tight, overall a Fine copy. This title is not as rare as some others of 19th century Alpinism, but few are in as nice a condition as this one. C.T. Dent's genius blossomed in this work, the first of its kind. He was well respected in his lifetime as a climber, surgeon, and as a person of substance. This is both a how to climb book, and a memoir of his climbs in the Alps, some extreme. There are chapters in rock and snow climbing technique, equipment, climbing without guides, climbs in Great Britain, camping out, photography, more. He did many first ascents in the Alps, the Dru being his best. He also was President of the Alpine Club. This is a fine example this title, in reasonable condition, given its age. Foreword by H.R.H The Prince of Wales (Badminton, 1895) with chapters on the: History, Maps and Guidebooks (Conway), Mountaineering beyond the Alps (Freshfield), Far Away Countries (Bryce), Sketching (Willink), Camping and Photography (Dent). With contributions by W.M.Conway, D.W. Freshfield, C.E. Mathews, C. Pilkington, Sir F. Pollock, H.G. Willink, and an Introduction by Mr. Justice Wills.
