New York, 1978, 1st edition. 192 pp, ills. Out of print now, but still one of the best texts on ice climbing. This is the finest copy we have seen of Yvon's classic book on ice climbing. After 47 years most hardcovers have either lost their dust jacket or the dust jacket is ragged or chipped, soiled, torn or stained. This is a book for you to get signed. Yvon got tired of me nagging him to sign books, so ge put up a firewall so I won't call him anymore. However, he will be happy to sign this copy for you. Like all the billionaires that you know, some are sweet and some are sour. [In all honesty, the paper that is sometimes chosen for dust jackets is pretty shitty and does not hold up. That was really the case in the 1930s, depression years. Publishers rightly feel is that dust jackets, in 2024, are an anachronism, and they can print the pretty cover on the book now, so no DJ is needed, thereby saving maybe half a buck. But over the years the publishers go up and down on this issue. In the 1980s through the 2000s when we stocked more front list books, which is just book speak fornewly published books, call publishers to get extra copies of the DJs. Publishers print and hold extra DJs not for your benefit or mine, but for copies that are returned from bookshops unsold and look a little tatty, and can be sold again at full price. Of course we sell most new books long before they needed a new dust jacket, and we never return books to publishers. So now we are sitting on a cornucopia of brand new dust jackets for books published while we have been in business, from 1984 to today. And EVERY book gets returned. Even Into Thin Air first editions got returned. It was the best selling climbing book by an American author. When we were selling signed firsts for over $500, I could buy for returned copies under $10] The story behind this copy and why it remained in pristine condition goes like this. This was a review copy that in 1978 Chouinard or the publisher gave to Summit Magazine to do a book review. This copy has no marks of any kind, no old prices, etc. It has never been sold, until we purchased several boxes of review copies of books this year. We bought all that remained from the magazine's original owners, Helen Kilness and Jene Crenshaw. They started in November 1955 and did their last copy in June 1989. We tried listing and selling these extra DJs in the early 1990s, but they are not arranged in order (by size) so it could take a while to find the right one. Then it needs to be shipped in a tube, more expense. I pulled the plus on that a long time ago. This book is larger and heavier than normal. Extra postage will be requested for Priority Mail or International Mail. 'Yvon Chouinard's Climbing Ice is not only the last word on the subject, but the first words from all American press on modern ice techniques. Climbing Ice is no beginner's manual, but rather a compendium on the sport. The book explores the history of snow and ice climbing, details techniques from the graceful and delicate French method of moving on ice to cutting steps and front-pointing on crampons. It also includes useful chapters on equipment, the formation and structure of snow and ice and avalanches. '... Yvon Chouinard, a modern Eckenstein and the godfather of ice climbing in this country, has written the rulebook of this old yet new climbing game.' -- Outside Magazine Peter Boardman Yvon Chouinard has been climbing since he was sixteen years old in 1954, and has done 'extreme mountain climbing' including notable first ascents in the United States, Canada, Mexico, and as far south as Patagonia. He has made fifteen climbing trips (by 1978) to Britain and the Continent; he's climbed in New Zealand, Kenya, and in the Himalaya. Apart from this extraordinary record, he is also regarded as a virtuoso in the design of equipment; along with Tom Frost, his former partner in the company he founded and ran for many years. As The Great Pacific Iron Works and then Chouinard Equipment Company, and finally as Patagonia, (sold, and now Black Diamond), he has systematically redesigned almost every piece of equipment used in climbing. At age 86 he still lives with his wife and son in Ventura, California.
