Article in the CALIFORNIA HISTORICAL SOCIETY QUARTERLY, Vol. XLII (42), Number 1, MARCH, 1963. Paper bound magazine. Fine. The complete issue is present, approx 100 pages. The article contains reproductions of 16 photos taken by legendary photographer Eadweard Muybridge in 1867 and 1872 in Yosemite Valley. The pictures are of both people and scenery. We bought this copy in 1993 from the estate of Vernon Howard, a prominent San Francisco bookseller. Other articles also include ''Progress and Poverty A Paradox Kenneth Johnson "How the Overland Limited Came to the Southern Pacific" by Lucius Beebe, "The California Catholic Church in Transition, 1846-1850; and "Site of the Diamond Swindle of 1872" by Peter Farquhar. Book reviews. Endnotes, illustrated. 86 pp. plus a list of members. Eadweard Muybridge (1830 � 1904, born Edward James Muggeridge) was an English photographer known for his pioneering work in photographic studies of motion, and early work in motion-picture projection. He adopted the first name "Eadweard" as the original Anglo-Saxon form of "Edward", and the surname "Muybridge", believing it to be similarly archaic. A noted photographer in the 19th century American West, he photographed Yosemite, San Francisco, the newly acquired Alaskan Territory, subjects involved in the Modoc War, and lighthouses on the West Coast. He also made his early "moving" picture studies in California.
