New York, Lyons Press, 1990, first edition. 186 pp, ills. Hardcover with dust jacket. Other than the author's signature, there is no writing in the book or other flaws, and the dust jacket has no wear and is not price clipped. The Dust Jacket and the book are Fine. The Dust Jacket is protected by a removable Brodart clear plastic dust jacket cover. Above: Jon Krakauer's ''signature'' on the half title page of the first edition of Eiger Dreams, his first book, 7 years before Into Thin Air. I have watched Jon Krakauer sign his name hundreds of times, and he always prints it, which is more common nowadays than you might think. Above: This is the copyright page of the first edition of Eiger Dreams, Jon Krakauer's first book. The date is 1990, 7 years before Into Thin Air was written and published. The row of numbers, 10 to 1, under the words Printed in the United States of America, indicates the latest edition. In this case, the number one is the lowest which means this is a first edition. Later when Into The Wild and Into Thin Air were published by Villard, a branch of Random House, their custom for many years was to start the lowest number of the ten printings as a 2, The Number Two, which is confusing when you are looking for a first edition of a book from any Random House branch. Almost all booksellers of used books are familiar with this quirk of Random House, and it is only confusing the first time you see it. Random House is one of the largest publishers in the world, and as there are no laws governing what a publisher can say, they can say whatever they want. Authors and publishers always indicate that the book is protected by copyright. However, newspapers and magazines are also protected by copyright, and they do not declare it every issue. The dust jacket for the first edition of Eiger Dreams is different from later printings, different even from the three additional printings that Lyons made after April 1997, when ITA first came out. After ITA became a bestseller the publisher added a blurb about ITA on the front of the dust jacket. The jacket you see in this image is the correct dust jacket for the first printing. For several years after Into Thin Air and Into the Wild were both on the New York Times Best Sellers List, the asking price of this earlier book went above $700. Jon's first book was published 7 years before Into Thin Air. Lyons was the original publisher of this book. When ITA and Into the Wild became bestsellers Lyons sold the Eiger Dreams rights to Random House (under the Villard name.) This copy is SIGNED on the half title page by JON KRAKAUER. Jon always writes in all caps, including his name. No matter what the actual temperature may be, several pages into Eiger Dreams you will begin to shiver. Halfway through you will acquire a new appreciation for your fingers, toes, and the fact that you still have a nose. And by the end of this collection, you'll define some commonly used phrases in an entirely different way. The understated 'catch some air' and the whimsical 'log some flight time' are climbers' euphemisms for falling, while 'crater' refers to what happens when you log some flight time all the way to the ground. 'Summiting,' the term for reaching the top of a mountain, seems almost colorless in comparison. The various heroes, risk-takers, incompetents, and individualists Krakauer captures are more than colorful, whether they summit or not. The author is more interested in exploring the addiction of risk -- the intensity of effort -- than mere triumph. There's the mythical minimalist climber, John Gill, whose fame 'rests entirely on assents less than thirty feet high,' and the Burgess brothers - freewheeling, free-floating English twins who seem to make all the right decisions when it counts, and hence most often fail to reach the top. Of course, they are alive. Over these and other talented climbers hangs a malignant, endlessly creative nature - its winds can make people crazy and its avalanches do far worse. Eiger Dreams is an adrenaline fest for the weary, an overdue examination of a stylish, brave subculture. As one of the heroes Krakauer outlines says of his occupation, "It's sort of like having fun, only different."
