We (Michael Chessler), have been collecting used climbing books and gear for the last fifty years. Most of my own climbing was in the 1960s and 1970s, and some of my personal gear is being sold. I knew that some old gear would become collectible, but of course could not know which. I collected most of this gear at the same time I was buying the old climbing books we sell. When we visited an climber to buy his or her books, we asked if we could buy their old gear. We have waited so long to offer old gear for sale because we did not know the descriptions of new gear after we stopped climbing, or the current demand, and values. So we consulted America's leading gear expert, Marty Karabin, who has created a museum of climbing gear in the Phoenix Rock Gym in Phoenix AZ, and a museum of Chouinard Equipment in California at Patagonia Headquarters. To my surprise most old climbing gear has not become expensive as there were so many people climbing in every decade from the 1960s to today. Most climbers eventually stop climbing, so there are lots of Carabiners, Pitons, Hammers, Ice Axes and Nuts around, not to mention old ropes, slings, boots, helmets, swami belts, bolts and hangers, drills. We have been selling old ices axes for thirty five years, once we discovered that they make an excellent display in anybody's home, and that we could enhance them with the signatures of Sir Edmund Hillary and many other great climbers. So now in 2024 we are offering as collectibles items that we have collected. This listing is an Oval Carabiner. These appear to be unused and have working gates. These biners are marked Salewa West Germany, R. Robbins, 3000 lbs. Royal Robbins started several businesses when he saw that guiding climbers was not a lucrative occupation in the 1970s. He published some books, and he started importing and distributing climbing ropes and hardware to climbing shops. His clothing line came much later.
