Seattle, Mountaineers, 1960, 1st edition, 1st printing. 430 pp, many photos and illustrations. This is a fine copy of the original hardcover book that has helped train tens of thousands of mountaineers. The rare clear plastic dust jacket is 99% intact with only minor repaired tear, nearly invisible. The title is bright and visible on the spine and cover. This is as good a copy as exists today. There is a previous owner's gift message in the front endpaper (dated May 27, 1960. One of the first ones ever). Overall the book is bright and fine. This is by far the best selling and most influential American mountaineering technique and inspiration book of the 20th century. It sold over 1/2 million copies since 1960. It is fun to collect all the editions, and I have seen a collection of every printing of every edition. This first edition is the scarcest because it was only sold in the northwest, so few copies ended up in climber's hands until the 2nd edition. The clear plastic dust jacket with the book's name written on the jacket rather than on the book itself is the bit of originality that is fun to appreciate. Chapters include Equipment, Camping and Sleeping, Alpine Cuisine, Wilderness Travel, Navigation in the Hills, Rock Climbing: Route Finding; Balance; Counterforce; Roped Climbing; Belaying; Piton Craft and Rappels. Snow and Ice Climbing: Snow; Ice; Glaciers; Arrests and Belays; Safe Climbing: The Climbing Party and its Leadership; Climbing Dangers; First Aid; Alpine Rescue; The Climbing Environment: Mountain Geology; The Cycle of Snow; Mountain Weather; Appendix: Food Requirements for Climbers. There are 16 exquisite photo plates printed on glossy paper that enhance the detail of the images, and they include Mount Saint Elias in the Yukon, Berg Lake in the Canadian Rockies, Mount Formidable, Ripsaw Ridge, Mount Fury in the Picketts, Bugaboos, Forbidden Peak, Dome Peak and the White Rock Lakes (I climbed Dome Peak in 1972), Ptarmigan Ridge, Sledging on the Seward Glacier near Saint Elias, The Terrible Traverse on Mount Constance in the Olympics, Mount Olympus, Puyallup Glacier, Devils Thumb in BC, Mount Logan, Mount Olympus on the Olympic Peninsula, Puyallup Glacier, Mount Rainier and Mount Robson.
