Large format description of Beckey's 35 favorite peaks. Fred Beckey is the legendary mountaineer and author of numerous books and climbing guides, including the classic Challenge of the North Cascades.

This large-format book measures approximately 9 by 12 inches and features 35 chapters on the greatest peaks of North America, including Mt. McKinley, St. Elias, Waddington, Rainier, Hood, Shasta, Whitney, Ship Rock, Robson, Grand Teton, and many others. The book is lavishly illustrated with color photographs by Galen Rowell, Art Wolfe, Ed Cooper, Russell Lamb, David Muench, and others.

"Mountains of North America is not a mountaineer's atlas, as its name implies; nor is it a climber's route book, for which we should be grateful. Neither is it a geology text, a history, a photo-essay, or a catalog of the author's climbs, although it partakes of all these things. It is hard to say just what it is. Perhaps it most resembles the Combination Plate at a Mexican restaurant: you get a bit of each item, and after a while, with enough salsa, they all taste the same.

Each of the thirty-five chapters of the book concentrates on a single peak, chosen either for its unique qualities or as representative of an area. Though not necessarily the highest, the most difficult, or the most well-known mountains in North America, the features they do share are Fred Beckey's footprints and his love. Whether that is sufficient adhesive to hold a book together the reader will have to determine.

"Be especially careful not to spill your coffee on any of the 140 color photographs, as they are the most painstaking reproductions ever to appear between hard covers. The color is brilliant, the detail perfect and the layout tasteful.” - Ron Matous, American Alpine Journal 1983, p. 325-326

Fred Beckey has climbed or visited all the peaks described here, and in a number of cases was a member of the first-ascent team. His lively and informed portraits reflect the remarkable diversity of the continent's mountain ranges, and summarize the most recent scientific theories about their geologic history. He also chronicles the role they played in the epic continental explorations and the allure they hold for present-day adventurers and seekers of wild beauty.

The photographs, a unique collection assembled through the resources of the author and Sierra Club Books, both complement the text and tell their own eloquent story They depict the mountains in many moods, as well as their characteristic flora and wildlife, and the drama of mountaineering.

Mountains are many things to many people; some are thrilled by scenic vistas, some gain inspiration, others discover both adventure and a kinship with nature difficult to find in modern civilization. Few people have seen all the peaks represented here, and fewer still have explored their wonders. In Mountains of North America any reader can trace the path of a glacier, observe an elusive mountain goat, or even stand on a summit.

Fred Beckey has been exploring North America's mountains for more than 40 years and has countless first-ascents to his credit. He is the author of the classic Cascade Alpine Guide in three volumes and an autobiographical work, Challenge of the North Cascades.

The 35 peaks chosen by Beckey for his portraits are outstanding representatives of their region or range, from Clingmans Dome, a gentle, forested crest in the Great Smokies, to Mexico's Pico de Orizaba, a huge and solitary volcano rising out of an arid plain. He profiles Mount Washington in New Hampshire's White Mountains; Harney Peak in the Black Hills of South Dakota; historic Pike’s Peak; the majestic Grand Teton; Assiniboine in the Canadian Rockies; Mount Deborah in the imposing Alaska Range; America's most recent mountain ''celebrity, '' Mount St. Helens; and many more.

Over eons of geologic time the North American continent has given birth to some of the world’s most spectacular marvels--mountain peaks and ranges that exemplify nature at its grandest, from the weathered swells of the Appalachians to the rugged and forbidding towers of Alaska. In this magnificent volume, legendary mountaineer Fred Beckey takes a descriptive, historic, and scenic odyssey among these high regions and combines his firsthand experience and research with 140 full-color photographs by leading wilderness photographers to create an unparalleled celebration of North America's mountains.
