The story of Chris McCandless, a young man who embarked on a solo journey into the wilds of Alaska and whose body was discovered four months later, explores the fascinating allure that the wilderness has for the American imagination
Into The Wild was made into a feature film, directed by Sean Penn, with Emile Hirsch as McCandless, in 2007. The film was faithful to the book, was well reviewed, won many awards, and did moderately well at the box office. There is a video on Youtube of Jon Krakauer teaching Sean Penn how to ice climb in Alaska.
This title is less common as a first edition than Into Thin Air, and they were both on the best seller list for most of 1997.
Described by friends and relatives as smart, literate, compassionate and funny, did McCandless simply read too much Thoreau and Jack London and lose sight of the dangers of heading into the wilderness alone? Krakauer, whose own adventures have taken him to the perilous heights of Everest, provides some answers by exploring the pull the outdoors, seductive yet often dangerous, has had on his own life.
