New York, AAC, 1949, 1st edition. 271 pp, photos, maps. This is a small hardcover, in excellent condition. Only 6 1/2 inches by 4 1/2 inches. There is no edge wear, no internal or external writing or marks, it is clean and Fine. Endpaper writing is in pencil. Really looks like new. It is not signed by Fred Beckey or anybody else. This Cascades guidebook was the first book by Fred Beckey, one of the greatest American mountaineers. He was only 26 when he wrote it! It is now scarce and one of the most collectible American mountaineering books. Fred Beckey Fred Beckey started climbing at age 12, and climbing seriously while still a teenager. This was in the 1930s when hardly anybody was climbing. In the late 1940s, he asked The Mountaineers of Seattle to publish his first climbing guidebook Climber's Guide to the Cascade and Olympic Mountains of Washington. They turned him down, and in 1949 the American Alpine Club agreed to print a few hundred copies. It was so successful it was reprinted in 1953, and then revised and updated in 1961. beckey continued writing books, most notably the revised Cascade Guide as the Cascade Alpine Guide in 3 volumes, 1973, 1977, and 1981. Much updated, it is now the definitive three-volume description of the Cascades from the Columbia River to the Fraser River, still published by The Mountaineers in a large sturdy softcover..
