San Francisco, Sierra Club, 1986, 1st edition. 224 pp, 100+ photos. Large Format Hardcover, Dust Jacket and Book are both in Very Fine condition. Other than the author's signature, there is no writing in the book or other flaws, and the dust jacket has no wear and is not price clipped. The Dust Jacket is protected by a removable clear Brodart plastic book cover. The Dust Jacket and the Book are in Fine or even New condition. One copy is SIGNED ''To Lorraine with best regards Galen Rowell.'' on the title page This copy is SIGNED ''To Paul Galen Rowell'' on the title page. Galen Rowell and I used to sell his books to each other. Sometimes I would get a good deal on his books, and sometimes he would. He was also always very generous about Signing books for our bookshop. In 1986 he Signed 100 copies of this book Mountain Light for us, and we sold every one. Later in 1987 we met and I told him, bragged really, how we sold all 100 books he signed for us. He asked me if I had heard of the Nature Company. I didn't know much. He said they also carried Mountain Light, and that Christmas they had sold 8,000 copies! What is more, Galen signed every copy! I felt embarrassed. As time passes, we will be finding those 8000 signed copies of Mountain Light, and make them available to our customers. In 2001 he moved his Mountain Light Photo Gallery from Berkeley to Bishop California. It was a good business move. He was selling a lot of books as well as his photos, posters, calendars, etc. He wanted to get more copies of his out of print books to sell in the Gallery, and he turned to me to help with that. At that time I had about 50 copies of his earlier books that he had not signed yet, so I sold them all to him at about $10 each, which is approximately what I had paid for them. I knew I could easily get more copies of his books and that he would sign them eventually. So when he died suddenly in 2002 in a plane crash in Bishop I realized that those 50 books would have been worth a lot if I had him sign them rather than sell them to him so cheaply. But he scratched my back a lot so I scratched his. He was only 62, just 4 years older than me. Later I met a climber who lived in Berkeley who told me that he and Galen had both been in the same Kindergarten class in 1945. I asked ''What was he like then?'' He floored me with his answer, "The same. He was a know-it-all even then!" This is Galen's best book on his craft of taking photographs. Mountain Light presents Galen Rowell's personal photographic ethic in inspiring and informative text and a stunning collection of eighty of his finest images. The photographs, with explanations of their making, are arranged in eight exhibits according to visual themes, which reflect Rowell's fascination with the infinitely varying qualities of light to be found in mountain landscapes. The special 'magic hour' at dawn and dusk, backlight, soft light, sundown to sunset, light against light, artist's light, placing figures in a landscape, and unexpected convergences of light and form are exemplified in the superb images and lively descriptions of how these images came about.
