Patagonia�s Cerro Torre in Patagonia, considered by some to be the most beautiful peak in the world, and draws the finest and most devoted technical alpinists to its climbing challenges. But controversy has swirled around this ice-capped peak since Cesare Maestri claimed the first ascent in 1959 using a gas powered tool to drill bolt holes. Since then a debate has raged with world-class climbers attempting to retrace his route but finding only contradictions. This chronicle of hubris, heroism, controversies and epic journeys offers a glimpse into the human condition, and extreme endeavors that at face value have no worth. Kelly Cordes took up climbing when he was in his mid-20s and in a few short years he went from the stoked-but-not-safe �Sketchy Kelly� to putting up first ascents on some of the world�s most difficult and remote mountains. In 2004, he and Josh Wharton tackled the one of the longest alpine rock routes in the world: the then-unclimbed Azeem Ridge on Pakistan�s Great Trango Tower, a 7,400-foot 5.11 rock climb. Cordes has climbed new routes around the world, from South America to Pakistan, and he�s a longtime writer for Alpinist, Climbing, Patagonia�s The Cleanest Line, and for films like Cold and Making Tommy. He worked as a senior editor of the American Alpine Journal.
