Detailed Product Description
New Jersey, Prentice Hall, 1962, 1st edition. 237 pp, 16 b/w plates, map of McKinley Park on the end papers. Hardcover with a very clean and unchipped dust jacket. Book and DJ are Fine.

This copy has an old SIGNATURE & long INSCRIPTION from Grant Pearson, to some friends of his in Alaska.  Pearson lists his own address as the Alaska State Legislature, Juneau Alaska. Dated February 18, 1964. There were no zip codes until 1983.

This book sold well in 1962, and is common enough. However, very few were Signed by Grant Pearson.

1932: Second ascent of both Denali summits. The party was Alfred Lindley, Harry Liek, Grant Pearson, Erling Strom. (Both summits were climbed. From Wikipedia)

Grant Pearson was a National Park Ranger who was on the second ascent of McKinley in 1932, the first to climb the North and South summits. This book has about 70 pages that directly relate to mountaineering on Denali and adjacent peaks. The author was member of the 1932 4-man expedition that made the second ascent of both the main summit and the North Peak, the first team to climb both summits of McKinley.

The other climbers on the team were Harry Liek, Al Lindley, and skiing pioneer Erling Strom. While they were climbing the mountain another expedition consisting of Theodore Koven, Allen Carpe, and three other scientists was active in the area making cosmic ray observations.

Upon returning from their successful ascent, the Lindley-Liek team found the frozen body of Koven who had probably fallen into a crevasse and managed to climb out before expiring. They never found Carpe's body. The other members of the scientific team were lower down with one very ill and another lost (rescued later) during his attempt to go out for help. The Koven-Carpe tragedy was the first fatal accident on McKinley. Pearson includes a chapter about it in this book.

Pearson's first job as a ranger in the Park was under the supervision of Harry Karstens, a.k.a The Seventy Mile Kid, the co-leader, and climbing leader, on the first ascent expedition of 1913 with Hudson Stuck. There are good descriptions of Karstens and many quotes of Karstens in the first half of the book.

Pearson was also a member of Bradford Washburn's 1947 Denali expedition where Barbara Washburn became the first woman to climb Denali. Pearson turned back at 19,000 feet because his heart was pounding too hard and he was feeling the altitude too strongly.

Though Washburn was willing to halt the climb for a rest until Pearson felt better, Pearson declined because he didn't want to reduce the chances of the others reaching the summit. It's one of the better passages in this book. This was the fourth ascent of Denali.
