SIGNED & INSCRIBED by Bradford Washburn, dated 1992.
This was Washburn's first full-size book and it conveys a youthful energy and passion for exploring that would continue well past normal 'retirement' age. After writing this book he lived another eighty years, to age 96, and became one of the most respected and prolific American mountain climbers.
Washburn went on to pioneer major Alaskan climbs including the 1951 first ascent of the West Buttress, now the 'normal' route up Mt McKinley. He is responsible for the definitive maps of Mount Everest, Mount McKinley, the Grand Canyon, and Mount Washington and New Hampshire's Presidential Range. He was director for the Boston Museum of Science and was elected in 1985 Honorary Director for Life. He was world-renowned for his unmatched crystal clear photography of mountains, especially for those of mountains in Alaska and the Alps.
He held honorary doctorates from ten colleges and universities and was a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and London's Royal Geographical Society. He was also awarded the National Geographic Society's highest honor, The Centennial Medal, granted for outstanding contributions to geographical exploration.
