If this author named his daughter after Taylor Swift, would she be known as Taylor Taylor? Massachusetts, Coward McCann, 1981, first edition. 254 pp, color photos. Hardcover with dust jacket. Fine. This book is SIGNED on the title page by Rob Taylor. There is no other writing in the book. Loosely inserted in this copy is a handwritten letter [ALS] SIGNED illegibly and talking about whether to sign just his name or give a longer personalization. Many of the books we see have a personal message from Rob, but there are also many copies ''flat signed'', with just his name. Rob Taylor and some other authors, all baby boomers or younger, get tired or bored signing copies of their books. We also meet climbers who are in the book, but did not contribute text to the book. So they scrawl their name like they are signing on those flat screens in restaurants. When they are gone, the signature is the only thing we have that the author or climber actually touched, for us to remember him. The illegible signature is stupid. It's not like signing in a restaurant or on a traffic ticket. It represents you to people who have actually spent money to read your book. An attempt on the Breach Wall of Kilimanjaro led to a fall and a broken ankle, then to a rescue and controversy. This is the account of the author's attempted ascent of the Icicle Route on the Breach Wall of Kilimanjaro. The author was injured in a fall from the icicle. A controversial rescue & conflict ensued. Taylor uses a pseudonym in this book for his partner, Henry Barber. This is a good read despite being somewhat weird in places. The first ascent of this route was completed later by Reinhold Messner.
