India, 1985, 2nd edition. 193 pp, b/w photos, maps. Hardcover with dust jacket. Fine. The book is immaculate, like New. Narrative of the Guiseppe Tucci expedition to Central Tibet in 1948 with an appendix on Tibetan Medicine and Hygiene by Regolo Moise, of the Navy Medical Corps. A wonderful, painfully sad account of a trip to Tibet, including a meeting with the Dalai Lama, in what would be its final years of freedom before the Chinese invasion of 1950. The scientist and explorer Giuseppe Tucci wrote about his journeys to Asia and his passion for traveling and experiencing �the far� - far from the banality and superficiality of everyday and massified relationships. Hr participated in expeditions with Fosco Maraini and Pietro Mele. He was one of the first scientists to explore the hitherto unexplored regions of Tibet and Nepal, he was an anthropologist, archaeologist, and he disseminated Asia culture, both ancient and contemporary � and he was a journalist too. Giuseppe Tucci, the legendary Italian oriental expert on the whole of Asia, gave the world a better understanding of the greatest Asiatic religions, and his critical editions and original translations of valuable texts in Sanskrit and in Tibetan opened up southern Asia to scholars. With his legendary scientific expeditions to Tibet, Nepal, Ladakh and Bhutan he opened up these countries to geographers and modern travelers.
