SIGNED by Colin Monteath on a card inside the front cover. Of the many books produced about the ''Into Thin Air'' tragedy on Mount Everest on May 10, 19096, this was one of the first to appear. Written by Colin Monteath, one of New Zealand's leading explorers and mountaineers, writers and photographers, this book was published in both a trade edition and this incredibly beautiful large format hardcover, presented in a sturdy slipcase that will protect the books for much longer than anything else, including the plastic Dust Jacket covers that we swear by. The link is just to the left of this paragraph on our website, under After Thin Air [Everest 1996 legacy] Rob Hall's death on Everest in the May 10, 1996 tragedy overshadowed the accomplishments of himself and his partner Gary Ball who guided 40 persons to Everest's summit. Both the pictures and text of this book are authentic and tell the story of typical New Zealand adventurers that became famous and died in the mountains. The pictures are by Rob Hall, Gary Ball, their clients and friends. The text puts the Himalayan climbing tragedies in the context of the lives of the heros and their friends. Details come from journals, letters, interviews, and memories. The author knew Hall & Ball well. This is a great tribute, compelling read, and looks good as a coffee table book too.
