London, Hodder & Stoughton, 2003 [1953], 1st edition facsimile. 280 pp, 14 b/w photos on glossy paper. Hardcover book with a brand new Dust Jacket. Enclosed in a slipcase. Condition is brand New. Includes an extra page that is a facsimile of the signature page from the 1993 fortieth anniversary edition, which had ten signatures. This has been re-done with the additions of Tenzing, Tom Bourdillon, Wilfrid Noyce, Tom Stobart, and Jan Morris. The first three had died before 1993, and Stobart and Morris were not climbers and not part of the climbing team. Also, Griffith Pugh's signature has been replaced with an earlier one, more legible. On May 29, 1953, Edmund Hillary of New Zealand and Tenzing Norgay of Nepal became the first human beings to conquer Mount Everest -- Chomolungma, to its people -- at 29,028 ft. the highest place on earth. [New GPS sourced elevation as of 2020 is 8,848.86 m (29,031.7 ft]. By conquering Everest, the beekeeper and the Sherpa affirmed the power of humble determination. The names of Hillary and Tenzing went instantly into all languages as the names of heroes, partly because they really were men of heroic mold but chiefly because they represented so compellingly the spirit of their time. Hillary and Tenzing went to the Himalayas under the auspices of the British Empire, then recognizably in terminal decline. The expedition was the British Mount Everest Expedition, 1953, and it was led by Colonel John Hunt, a true English Officer and a Gentlemen. It was proper to the historical moment that one of the two climbers immortalized by the event came from a remote former colony of the Crown and the other from a nation that had long served as a buffer state of the imperial Raj.
