This copy is SIGNED by Lincoln Hall on the title page

Winner of the Banff Mountain Festival Special Jury Prize 2007.

"The day I summited Mount Everest was the day I died." Lincoln Hall set off for Everest in early May 2006. Five weeks after reaching Base Camp in Tibet, he began his push for the summit. After three days of climbing higher into the oxygen-less air, he was blessed with a perfect summit day.

For a few minutes, Hall was the highest man on the planet. His Sherpa companions arrived, photos were taken, and the climbers commenced their long descent. Then things began to go horribly wrong. Hall was struck by cerebral edema - high altitude sickness - in the aptly named 'death zone'. Drowsiness quickly became overpowering lethargy, and he collapsed in the snow.

Two Sherpas spent hours trying to revive him, but as darkness fell he was pronounced dead. The expedition's leader ordered the Sherpas to descend to save themselves. The news of Hall's death traveled rapidly from mountaineering websites to news media around the world, and by satellite phone to Hall's family in Australia. Early the next day, Dan Mazur, an American mountaineering guide with two clients and a Sherpa, was startled to find Hall sitting cross-legged on the knife-edged crest of the summit ridge.

Hall's first words - "I imagine you are surprised to see me here" - were a massive understatement. Much was reported in the press about Hall's resurrection, but only he has real insight into what happened, and how he survived that longest night. DEAD LUCKY is Lincoln Hall's own account of climbing Everest during a deadly season in which eleven people perished on the world's highest mountain.

Lincoln Hall was one of Australia's best known mountaineers whose climbing career spanned three decades. His high-altitude climbing career culminated in his key role in the first Australian ascent of Mt Everest in 1984 and his book White Limbo, was an international bestselling account of this first Australian ascent. The Loneliest Mountain, Lincoln's story of sailing to Antarctica in a small yacht to make the first ascent of Antarctica's Mt Minto, was also published internationally. He died of mesothelioma in 2012.

He wrote three biographies: First Ascent, The Life and Climbs of Doug Mortimer, Douglas Mawson, The Life Of An Explorer and Fear No Boundary (about Australian mountaineer, 2005).

Documentaries have been made about four of Lincoln's mountaineering expeditions, and he was involved in all of these productions in different capacities, from from funding to high altitude cinematography and script-writing. In 1999, Lincoln joined a successful Australian-American expedition to Makalu, the world's 5th highest peak.

As well as climbing, he wrote the scripts and shot video footage for two documentaries - “Sheer Will”, and “Winds over Makalu” (Outdoor Life Network on American cable). He also wrote the script for “Everest: the Millennium Expedition” for NBC Sports in the USA, about the American expedition which re-surveyed the height of Mt Everest. From 1993 until 1996, Lincoln was Managing Editor of “Out There”, an adventure and outdoors magazine published by Paddy Pallan.

He was later Editor at Large for “Expanse” published by ACP Action. More recently, he was Editor of “Outdoor Australia”, a bimonthly adventure magazine published by Emap. Lincoln was the Director of the Australian Himalayan Foundation. The Himalayan Foundation marked a new phase in Lincoln's involvement with the Himalaya. He returned to the Tibetan side of Everest in September, 2003, as a trekking guide, then again as a mountaineer in 2006, when he reached the summit.

Lincoln resided with his wife Barbara Scanlan and their two teenage sons in Wentworth Falls.
