London RGS, April 1938. Volume 91 No 4. British Graham Land Expedition Antarctica 1934-1937 JR Rymill with color Fold-Out Map; Shaksgam Expedition 1937 [Blank on the Map expedition] Eric Shipton; Great Barrier Reefs; Sahara, etc. Condition is Fine. The British Royal Geographical Society was formed in 1830 to have a central organziation to record, and promote the exploration of the many corners of the world that was still terra incognita to Europeans. The nineteenth and early twentieth centuries were the era of great exploration that coincided with the flowering of the British Empire. The RGS was comprised of educated and usually affluent gentlemen who explored the interior of the entire world, as before the 19th-20th centuries the only areas that had been visited and mapped by westerners was Europe and America. *The early history of the RGS enshrines such famous names as* Darwin, Hillary,' Hunt, Filippi Freshfield, Livingston, Scott, Shackleton Stanley, Speke, Wallace, Workman, Younghuband, The growth of newly discovered land sea and exploration produced information, maps, charts and knowledge, which was gathered and usually sent to the RGS. From 1830 the accounts of exploration were recorded in the Geographical Journal which is still published today. The RGS also was designed to keep an eye on the far flung colonies of the British Empire, then the largest empire in world history.
