When I got my first job in the 1960s in a climbing shop that involved selling clothing and boots for hiking and climbing, we noticed that many, if not most, buyers of the Sierra Designs and North Face jackets we sold, and the Lowa, Galibier and Vasque boots, were going to wear their new duds as everyday wear, not just on climbs. That is as true today as it was 60+ years ago. This book explores the connection between the look and fabric of the outdoor garments and how it was co-opted by the high fashion world of rich people whose goal was to impress each other by the look of the garments rather than the performance. As my interests have not moved an iota since 1965 when I got my first job at Geenman's Climbing Shop on Spring Street in Manhattan, I was surprised at the extent that the world of high fashion, in Europe and America, had latched onto our products, and found a new market for them. I took a class in marketing back then and the teacher asked why Scuba Diving has not become a mass sport like hiking and climbing have. She said it was because there was no clothing that you could wear everyday to tell the world that you were a scuba diver. This book actually shows garments that did emulate the material and look of Scuba garments. THis book has text by fashion writers as well as ''our people'' describing how their adoption of ''puffers'' etc came to be. The first major study to explore the relationship between clothing made for survival in the most inhospitable environments on earth and beyond, and the high fashion it has inspired Today ― from haute couture to ready - to - wear ― parkas, puffer coats, and backpacks, as well as garments made of neoprene and Mylar are everywhere. But the roots of these ubiquitous items of dress and cutting- edge textiles are rarely acknowledged or understood. Inspired by the so-called �heroic era� of polar navigation (1890� 1922), extreme mountain climbing, deep sea exploration, and journeys to outer space, Expedition explores how garments made for the most inhospitable environments on earth and beyond have inspired more than sixty years of fantastical, otherworldly fashions. The 155 images, many full page, include high fashion magazine editorials by Irving Penn, Richard Avedon, and others; museum objects from the permanent collections of The Museum at FIT and the American Museum of Natural History; and unpublished photographs of early expeditions in the archives of the Explorer�s Club in New York.
