One of the best known books on Tibet. This reprint includes an introduction by Peter Hopkirk. Mdme. David-Neel sneaked into Lhasa in 1917 disguised as a beggar/pilgrim, lived there for two months in 1923-24, and returned to France. 
 
Born in Paris in 1868, French explorer Alexandra David-Neel was not your average 19th-century woman. Well-versed in Sanskrit and Buddhist philosophy, she eschewed drawing rooms and polite society for the vagabond life of a traveler and explorer. In 1923, at the age of 55, she undertook a daring journey into the heart of the Himalayas and a land at the top of the world: Tibet. Disguised as a pilgrim, she entered the forbidden city of Lhasa – the first European woman to do so – after 13 years spent wandering remote routes through China and Tibet.

Alexandra David-Neel, born Louise Eugenie Alexandrine Marie David (24 October 1868 – 8 September 1969), was a Belgian–French explorer, spiritualist, Buddhist, anarchist and writer. She is most known for her 1924 visit to Lhasa, Tibet when it was forbidden to foreigners. David-Néel wrote over 30 books about Eastern religion, philosophy, and her travels, including Magic and Mystery in Tibet which was published in 1929. Her teachings influenced the beat writers Jack Kerouac and Allen Ginsberg, the popularizer of Eastern philosophy Alan Watts, and the esotericist Benjamin Creme.
