Full Title is: REPORT O THE SECRETARY OF THE INTERIOR BY THE SUPERINTENDENT OF THE MOUNT RAINIER NATIONAL PARK 1915. Washington D.C. Government Printing Office, 1915. 18 pp. Softcover, excellent condition, Fine. This is one of the first issues of the booklet that has the words 'Mount Rainier National Park' and 'National Park Service' which was founded in 1916. The peak became a National Park in 1899. Climbing is mentioned in this booklet. There were two accidents in 1915. A Mr Ordway, ''a prominent attorney of Boaton Mass, '' while returning from the summit, he slipped on the ice, struck his head, rendering him unconscious,'' in which state he remained until his death.'' In those days nobody made jokes about Lawyers. Also a Mr Ferguson from Seattle, while in the Paradise Glacier ice cave was killed by a falling block of ice. He was poking it with his ice axe above him on the ceiling. Sounds like a Darwin Award. PERSONAL NOTE: On my first trip to the mountain west in 1967 I visited this ice cave and was amazed at its size and beauty. The Paradise Ice Caves collapsed and vanished in the 1990s, and the lower lobe of the glacier which once contained the caves has also vanished entirely between 2004 and 2006.
