A map of the Dinwoody Glacier in Wyoming. Printed on heavy paper stock, cream color. The map measures 17'' x 22'' and takes the whole of one side. The text takes up half the the reveerse side, and also includes a 5.5'' x 8.5'' topo map of the high peak region of the Wind River Mountains. We have several copies and they are all in as New condition. In fact, they looked so fresh that I scoured the map looking for a recent date, but all the dates given are from 1950 to 1953. From 1950 to 1952 Mark F. Meier, with financial support from the American Alpine Club, created a detailed map of the surface features of everybody's favorite glacier, the Dinwoody, as it is part of the normal route for climbing Gannett Peak, the highest in Wyoming. I had never heard about this map until a few days ago (January 2024), when they appeared among the AAJ reprints. The text on this map was published in the 1953 AAJ. Wikipedia on the Dinwoody Glacier: Dinwoody Glacier is located in Shoshone National Forest, in the U.S. state of Wyoming on the east side of the Continental Divide in the Wind River Range. Completely within the Fitzpatrick Wilderness, Dinwoody Glacier is one of the largest glaciers in the American Rocky Mountains, and as of 1989 was ranked fourth in area. In a 1989 study which examined repeat photography and stream flow analysis, Dinwoody Glacier was determined to have retreated rapidly between 1958 and 1983, though most of the reduction has been in the thickness of the glacier rather than its surface area. In the same 25-year period, the glacier lost an average of 23.4 m (77 ft) in thickness. Radar mapping of 72 locations on the glacier resulted in an average thickness of 54 m (177 ft) and a maximum measured depth of 111 m (364 ft). The 1989 study was commenced to examine the impact on water supplies to streams and rivers from glacier retreat of both Dinwoody and Gannett Glaciers.
