Detailed Product Description
UK, 2016, 1st edition. 256 pp, 80 large color photos and maps, also b/w illustrations by Edward Whymper.  Large format Hardcover with Dust Jacket, 12 x 8.25 inches. Fine condition.

This is  a large format, hardcover book packed with stunning photographs of the Matterhorn and many of the other mountains Whymper climbed, together with extracts from Edward Whymper’s book – The Ascent Of The Matterhorn and their own story as we retrace some of his steps.

Due to the large size and weight of this book, extra postage will be requested for Media Mail, Priority Mail and International Mail.

Commemorating the 150th anniversary of the first climb of the Matterhorn by Edward Whymper and his party in July 1865, this large format pictorial book features over 80 photographs of the world's most recognizable mountain, together with tantalizing extracts from Whymper's own book - The Ascent of the Matterhorn, and the details of Graeme Wallace's attempt to traverse the summit via the Liongrat and Hornli ridges 150 years later in 2015.

The Matterhorn at 4478m (14,691ft) is one of the best known mountains in the world and easily the most recognizable. Towering over the town of Zermatt, its fame has transformed the region from one of the poorest to one of the most prosperous in Europe.

In 1865, Englishman, Edward Whymper hurriedly set out on his 8th attempt to climb the Matterhorn in a long standing race against some of his fellow countrymen and an immediate race against a well funded Italian team. Now, 150 years later, in 2015 Graeme Wallace and Mat Tams plan to traverse the Matterhorn, ascending from the Italian side and descending the Swiss side. For Mat, this will be his third attempt; unable to even start on the previous two occasions due to bad weather. Will it be third time lucky for him and will our meticulous planning prevail?

The Matterhorn is the quintessential mountain. Its appearance fits everyone’s impression of how a mountain appears. Ask a child to draw a mountain and it will inevitably be shaped as a steep rectangular pyramid.

While the Matterhorn is far from being the highest mountain in the world and is not even the highest mountain in Europe nor in the Alps, its isolated position and four towering rock faces emphasizes its form, making it one of the most alluring mountains for climbers to scale. It is not risk free and sadly, over 500 people have died trying.
