London, Constable and Company, 1910, 1st UK edition. 298 pp, 113 ills ( 93 illustrations from photos, 20 photographic illustrations in the text), 2 maps (one in color). This is a handsome copy of one of the loveliest books about the Himalaya regions. The colored cover illustration is 99% intact. Slight wear at the top of the spine, on the corners and edges. Internally there is no foxing, no writing, no real flaws of any kind. The maps and plates are intact and not torn. Overall Very Good to Near Fine condition. The Workmans were American explorers who lived mostly in Germany, and produced several magnificent books on their travels, climbs and exploration in the western Himalaya. This book is the account of their fourth (out of eight total over 14 years) expedition in 1908. They explored the Hispar Glacier; then descended the Biafo Glacier in the Karakoram in 1908. Fanny Workman was one of the first female explorers of the Himalaya and an early professional mountaineer. Like so many other Americans she was first turned on to climbing above the tree line on Mount Washington in New Hampshire (so was I.) All her serious climbs and Glacier travel was done after she turned 40 years old. She was the first woman to ascend Nun Kun (23,000 ft), achieved three first-record ascents for women in the Karakoram, and made the first ascent of a Biafo watershed peak (21,350 ft). In 1911 she explored and mapped seven glaciers of the Hushe and Kondus systems, Karakoram, and she discovered the water-parting between the Indus and Chinese Turkestan. She was born in Massachusetts and usually traveled with her husband Dr. William Hunter Workman. She was one of the claimants, in the first decade of the 20th century, of the women's altitude record, vigorously defending her claim against that of Annie Peck. Her claim was based on an ascent of Pinnacle Peak, a subsidiary peak in the Nun Kun massif of the western Himalaya. She is the co-author, with William Hunter Workman, of five mountaineering books, and several cycling books. As of 2019 there is a new biography of the Workmans.
