1983 FOOD, PLANNING, REQUESTS, INVOICES 1983 AMERICAN EVEREST EXPEDITION TO CHINA California, 1983. This is the original Three Inch Thick Looseleaf Binder with all the Expedition's correspondence with over 100 food manufacturers, requesting donations for the expedition. Items like this almost never surface or are offered for sale. Both personal and official diaries come out all the time, but never the original spade-work of trying to raise free food against their $300,000 budget. This expedition was successful in putting 6 climbers on the summit over two days in October 1983, in the fall season, on an unclimbed route, from an isolated Tibetan basecamp, not the Times Square athmosphere of the Western Cwm. The expedition was the second of two attempts, the first in August-October 1981. That was the expedition that was led by Richard Blum (husband of Diane Feinstein) and Edmund Hillary, who had never been on the north side of Everest. Bad weather turned them back at 7000m. This 1983 team put these climbers on top: Carlos Buhler, Kim Momb, Lou Reichardt, Jay Cassell, George Lowe and Dan Reid. Each of these letters is very specific in what the expedition needs, some of the cookie and candy requests are quite humorous (500 lbs?) When the company said yes or no, their reply is also here, stapled to a copy of the team's request. If the team had to pay some amount, the actual invoice is here, marked paid and stapled to the correspondence. 1983 was pre-computer, so I expected to see carbon copies. And there was no email yet. Luckily copies were made on a copier, so they are very readable. What surprised me is that quite a few of the letters are signed by Carl Tobin or some other team member. With a real signature! How did the letter that was sent end up back with the team. Perhaps the letter was undeliverable. At some point Dan Reid became involved with quest for food, so there are many handwritten notes of his. There are under ten companies that Dan got involved with, so perhaps he helped out when time was tight and getting close to their deadlines. Dan and his wife Barbara were accomplished climbers. Google them and there is quite a bit online. A question arises, how did two fit and experienced climbers fall off Mount Kenya roped together? Sure, experienced climbers fall and die all the time. But why them and where there? We purchased Dan's books from Dan Reid's estate about ten years ago. We sold the books, but items like this are still here. We also have all of Dan's slides. Two cartons. We may also have 16mm prints of the expedition films of 1981 and 1983. The film-makers in 1981 are Kurt Diemberger and David Breashears. Not sure who filmed in 1983. I was told it was Breashears' first film.
