Minnesota, University of Minnesota Press, 1931, 1st edition. 81 pp, 7 b/w photos, map. A small but handsome hardcover with a tipped on photo on the cover. There is no wear or fading anywhere. Very Fine condition. This is the inscription on the FEP: Above is a gift inscription from one noted Sierra Club leader to another. The donor of the book is obviously named after the subject of this biography. This book is inscribed by a Sierra Club activist and trip leader named Holway Jones to William Colby, who was also a Sierra Club trip leader and activist, and who had been a SC member since 1898. Therefore we can assume that this was William Colby's copy. Dated May 21, 1955. The book was partially unopened when we received it. We slit some pages, some may still be unslit. Use a sharp knife blade, knives are easier to control than razor blades. This book is the biography of Edward Holway who with book author and noted pioneer climber of Canada's mountains. Howard Palmer made many first ascents in the Selkirks and other Canadian ranges. Holway R. Jones was a Minneapolis banker and botanist, who also was an accomplished mountaineer. This is a climbing biography of Holway who spent 16 seasons climbing in the Canadian Rockies and Interior Ranges, making many first ascents. He wrote 7 articles for the Canadian Alpine Journal about his climbs from 1909 to 1918. A previous owner of this copy found a biography of Holway Jones on the website of the University Of Oregon's Library, and a copy of his bio is loosely folded in this book. Along with the Jones material, addresses of several university libraries is mentioned, useful for future research. In Canada several University Libraries off excellent details on the early climbers of the western mountains. And undoubtedly any other subject realting to Canada's Arctic world. Howard Palmer joined Rdward Holway on several of the climbs. Holway made the first ascents of Mt. Edith Cavell, Longstaff, Cyprian Peak, Augustine, Topham, Citadel, Austerity, Sir Sandford, Adamant, and several other peaks. He was the first person to explore the Cariboo Mountains. The Cariboo Mountains are the northernmost subrange of the Columbia Mountains, which run down into the Spokane area of the United States and include the and include the Selkirks, Monashees and Purcells.
