Herbert Tichy (1912-1987) weaves his experiences of 7 Himalayan expeditions into the history, geography, ethnology of the region. This includes plenty of very interesting anecdotes about famous climbers & explorers based on the author's meetings them or conversations with others who knew them.
Tichy was an itinerate scholar with a doctorate in geology, but the bulk of his work was in geography. He travelled to the Himalaya many times as well as to other remote regions of the world (Africa, Tibet, Central Asia, China, Alaska), usually alone with one or two locals.
This book is a fairly comprehensive description of the Himalaya, the mountains, the people, their cultures. It covers history of exploration starting in 300 B.C. through the first ascents of the 8000m peaks. Much is written about local culture and traditions. The author describes visiting places and buildings written about by early explorers like Sven Hedin & Henry Savage Landor.
