But we all free solo when the terrain is easy, usually 4th class climbing for most of us. But when it gets to be 5th class, meaning not so much that is it harder, but that the climb is so vertical that unless you sprout wings you are in trouble. Free Soloing today refers to doing very difficult climbs with lots of exposure. The level of ability of accomplished climbers today is so high that more and more climbers are taking that extra risk because their skill level is so high that they feel their risk is not as great as the rating suggests.
