London or New York, 1953, US or UK edition. 220 pp, numerous illustrations from photographs, maps. Brown cloth hardcover with dust jacket. Near Fine to Fine. In English. Both the NY and UK edition were printed in Switzerland. The 1953 edition of Mountain World was the first edition that was published in English, previously the 1946 to 1952 editions were published in both a French and a German language edition, not just for export to France and Germany, but because Switzerland was, and still is, a bilingual country. The 1953 volume is the scarcest of the ten volumes that appeared in English. Mt Everest 1952 (17 Articles), Gosainkund by Ella Maillart, Bolivia, Peru, NE Greenland. Produced from 1946-1969 by the Swiss Foundation for Alpine Research. Articles include an Account of the First Swiss Everest Expeditions of 1952. The first English language of an annual publication on the exploration and climbing of mountains, consisting of articles by various authors including Ella Maillart, Raymond Lambert, Ernst Feuz, etc, with much on Everest, illustrations on Nepal, Bolivia, Peru, Greenland. Each member of the Everest Expedition of 1952 contributed an article. Kurz contributed an exhaustive survey of Everest history. The seventeen articles on Mount Everest occupy the first 136 pages of the book! There is also an eight article section on Mountain Exploration in North East Greenland. These articles occupy 36 pages. Also articles on Gosainkund in Nepal, Bolivian Climbs, and climbs in Peru. MOUNTAIN WORLD and BERGE DER WELT was published from 1946 to 1969 only in German and French but not in English until 1953 to 1969. MOUNTAIN WORLD was published from 1953 to 1969 in English in the USA and UK. There is no difference between the USA and UK editions. MOUNTAIN WORLD from 1946 to 1952 was published in hardcover and paperback only in German and French. The English language editions 1953 to 1969 were published only in hardcover with a dust jacket.
