New York, Harper & Brothers, 1909, reprint of single volume edition. 563 pp, 251 illustrations, foldout map, index. Red cloth hardcover with gilt titles and faded and damaged spine. Former owner's book plate on FEP. Map has slight tear where it's joined to page and rear hinge has been repaired. Interior is near fine. Good condition. An account of travels in western Tibet in 1897 and attempt to reach Lhasa from the Lake Manasarovar area. Landor was a famous painter and explorer, and was feted by society in his era, although now largely forgotten. He painted and explored his was around the world. Wikipedia has an excellent biography of him, too long to quote here except for these paragraphs: In 1897 Landor explored Tibet where, after terrible adversities and tortures, he discovered the sources of the Indus and the Brahmaputra. Landor returned fearlessly to Tibet a second time and then to Nepal. In 1901 he journeyed to India from Russia, travelling on horseback through Persia, and the same year published his account of that journey in the book Across Coveted Lands (1902). From his journeys to Tibet and Nepal come his books In the Forbidden Land (1898) and Tibet and Nepal (1905).
